Modalert: Review of User Reports and Modafinil’s Mechanism of Action

Most of us will never know what it’s like to be afflicted with narcolepsy.

Nevertheless, it is easy to understand that this is a serious problem.

When you simply cannot stop yourself from falling asleep at certain times, it turns everyday activities into gambles that could end very badly.

You could pass out and hit your head, or even pass out behind the wheel of a vehicle.

For people with this issue, a real medical solution is definitely needed.

What is a Cognitive Enhancer?

A cognitive enhancer is a substance that enhances the main functions of the brain.

Drugs of this type can temporarily enhance memory, creativity, and brain function in general.

However, it is worth noting that these types of drugs have not been studied near as much as they probably should have.

As such, many cognitive enhancers (also called nootropics) cannot be conclusively proven to be effective.

One problem is the fact that some of the criteria involved are highly subjective and thus difficult to measure. Modalert is said to be a cognitive enhancer.

How does Modalert Work?

Modalert contains a compound called modafinil. Modafinil is described in this study as a stimulant with an unknown method of action.

However, we can look at reviews of the product to get a better idea of what it does. Here is one example:

Based on this review, we can safely say that the drug behaves in a manner similar to other stimulants.

However, the effects are described as being relatively mild. It doesn’t seem as if we are dealing with a particularly strong stimulant here, but one should use caution all the same.

If you think about it, a drug used to treat these kinds of maladies would almost have to be a stimulant. Nothing else would really be effective in preventing people from falling asleep.

Is Modalert Effective?

There are studies that have found modafinil to be effective in the treatment of narcolepsy and hypersomnia.

Some side effects were observed, but the drug was found to be helpful for these conditions.

In some cases, it was able to reduce the instance of “sleep attacks” to zero. This means that the drug probably is effective for this purpose.

Another study, conducted by the Annals of Neurology, gave the drug glowing praise, saying that the drug was highly effective and that its side effects were relatively few.

Is Modalert safe?

This is the million-dollar question.

Even an effective drug is not worth using if it turns out to be dangerous.

First of all, this drug is not safe for pregnant mothers. In fact, the following article from the Journal Of Clinical Sleep Medicine recommends that you should not even use modafinil (or any other stimulant) when the child is conceived.

So, we can safely say that pregnant mothers should not use this drug. To be fair, this is true of most medications.

It is also true that Modalert legally requires a prescription from a doctor, at least in the United States.

This is because modafinil is classified as a schedule 4 controlled substance.

To give you an idea of how the classification works, schedule 1 drugs would include the most dangerous and illegal substances like heroin.

Schedule 2 includes amphetamines and opioid pills such as oxycodone. Schedules 3, 4, and 5 include drugs that are deemed to have a relatively low potential for abuse.

Based on its legal status, and upon the research, I think it can be said that this drug should be used with caution.

It does seem to be effective for its intended purpose, and may even have some interesting cognitive effects that have yet to be studied.

However, like most medicines, this substance can be dangerous if you don’t control your use. Potential side effects include:

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Fever/chills

  • Confusion

  • Insomnia

  • Unusual bleeding or bruising

  • Chest pain

  • Black or tarry stools

  • Urination difficulties

Overall, this drug seems to deliver on its promises.

However, I wouldn’t call it the perfect solution.

As a stimulant drug, it is subject to the same problems that all stimulant drugs can cause.

However, it is obvious that Sun Pharmaceuticals has attempted to make the mildest and most harmless stimulant that can be made.

Have they succeeded?

It’s hard to say, but this medicine does seem to be safe if used properly.

However, there can definitely be some negative consequences to the use of this drug, so I would advise that anyone using this drug should carefully regulate their dosage in accordance with their doctor’s advice.

For a person who is falling asleep all the time, this might be a good option to consider. Just make sure you go into it with your eyes wide open.
